Gaia and Living Relationship

Planetary life as nested participation

Definition. Gaia names the living planetary order that holds Earth’s material conditions and ecological relationships while participating within wider luminous, solar and cosmic fields.

Participation rather than ownership

Human beings are not placed above Gaia as outside managers. They are embodied within her material order and dependent upon her living systems. Trees, birds, rivers, soil, atmosphere and mineral structure participate according to their own form and function.

The human reflective capacity

The archive uses the analogy that humans may function like reflective nodes within Gaia. Human self-consciousness can perceive ecological beauty, damage, imbalance and regeneration from within the planetary body. This does not make humanity the creator of Gaia’s sentience or give one person authority to speak for the whole planet.

Relation tested through consequence

Claims of relationship with Gaia are tested by what they produce: greater attention, ecological responsibility, humility, truthful observation and less domination. Devotional experience may remain meaningful without being converted into proof of planetary office or control.
